Burundi gets US$43m to boost agriculture sector

The World Bank announced on Wednesday (22 September 2010) that it has given 43 million US dollars to Burundi to support the development of its agricultural sector. The grant will be used through the Agricultural Rehabilitation and Support project, according to the World Bank representative for Burundi, Mercy Miang Tembon.

Tembon noted that developing agriculture in the country is only possible now thanks to its political stability. However, media reports suggest that a spate of killings outside the capital Bujumbura this month have sparked fears of a new rebellion. Burundi is still recovering from a 12-year-long civil war that ended in 2005.
