Press freedom threat in DRC
The assassination of a journalist in the Democratic Republic of Congo has increased concerns among media activists about press freedom in the country. An investigation has been launched into the murder of Bruno Chirambiza, a reporter from Radio Star in the Bukavu district, who was stabbed by eight men in an apparently premeditated attack on Saturday, 22 August 2009.
The human rights group, Journalists in Danger, criticised the fact the victim was buried before an autopsy was completed and they have asked the United Nations Mission in Congo to support the investigation. Concerns about press freedom in the DRC have increased since the transmission of Radio France Internationale was banned a month ago.
