POS and SMS banking launches in Sierra Leone

Rokel Commercial Bank has launched online banking services to be known as the Point of Sale (POS) and SMS banking.

Speaking during the launch, the bank's Managing Director, Henry Macauley said the introduction of this new banking system in the country is to further enhance the integrity and easy access for their numerous customers in the country.

He spoke about some of the basic provisions of the new system which he said include the use of mobile phone to access customer's account, using the debit card instead of carrying cash to places like supermarkets, filling stations, building material stores, to access goods and that the device is being offered free of charge to all existing customers of the bank.

The Managing Director further explained that the account holder may terminate this agreement by written notice to the bank of all cards issued and the payment of all liabilities of the account holder of this agreement.

"The account holder will pay the bank the account of all card transactions, any charges levied by the bank as specified in the bank's Clause 4 of the agreement and any loss incurred by the bank arising from the use of the card or which the bank determines it has suffered as a result of any breach of the agreement by an account holder," Macauley said.

"The card holder should exercise due care to ensure the safety of the card and prevent the PIN Code becoming known to any other person."

Macauley went on to say that "Any record of the PIN must be unidentifiable and kept separately from the card and that if the card is stolen or for any reason subject to misuse or PIN becomes known to any other person, the card holder must immediately notify the branch or any branch of Rokel Commercial Bank (Sierra Leone) Ltd.

"The card holder must give the bank all the information in the card holder's possession as to the circumstances of the loss, theft or misuse of the card or the disclosure of the PIN and take all steps considered necessary by the bank to assist in the recovery of the missing card. The bank may withdraw easy access and facility or impose a charge for the card or any service provided under or in connection with this agreement from time to time," he warned.

The head of the team, Victor Cole, explained that easy access is a highly secured debit card that can conveniently be used at both the ATMs and merchant points throughout the country and allows card holders to make payment for goods and services and withdraw cash from various outlets and advised customers to be smart and use the Rokel Access Smart Card for easy life.

Talking about the bank's transactions, Cole said a copy of receipt will be presented upon completion of the transaction regardless of whether or not the request was granted and cited examples where withdrawals would have been approved or declined.

He said a merchant copy should be signed for all successful purchases or payments and the card will decline service for any incorrect PIN entries or if the magnetic strip on the card has been tampered with.

The public can apply for the card at any branch of the Rokel Commercial Bank in the country.
