- Mail & Guardian: 'Spies hacked paper's website'... The website of Botswana's only privately owned daily newspaper, Mmegi, one of Botswana's largest newspapers, was the victim of a cyber attack last week that wiped out 12 years of archive material, reports Mail & Guardian.
It is reported, its editor suspects the country's shadowy Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS), which is run by a feared spy, is behind the sophisticated attack.
There was an attempt to hack the website 10 days earlier, said Garai Makaya, Lifemedia's owner.
The directorate answers only to President Ian Khama, has vaguely defined and wide-ranging powers, and is seen as an important factor in Botswana's deteriorating media climate, reports Mail & Guardian.
