'Who wants to be a millionaire?' launches in Uganda

Ugandans are set to win millions of cash after a local mobile operator introduced the 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' tv gameshow in Uganda. The popular UK show has been localised by fixed line operator Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL), and Protel Studios, a Kenya-based independent content producer.

Donald Nyakairu, the chief legal officer, said the show is scheduled to start screening on Nation Television (NTV) Uganda, in January 2011. The top prize for 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' is Shs25 million ($10,870) and will be given out each week. Nyakairu said UTL and Protel have signed a Shs2 billion deal to bring the game to East Africa for the first time.

The show will feature a televised quiz game through which the mobile operator will offer cash prizes to Ugandans. He said, beneficiaries will be winners who correctly answer 15 consecutive multiple choice questions of increasing difficulty.

In comparison, the British and American televised games offers an annuitised maximum prize of £1 million and $1 million, respectively. The cash prizes are given to players for correctly answering 15 (UK) or 14 (US) consecutive multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty.

Alan Kasujja, a popular radio host, has been chosen to run the show.
