CoreXalance Legal Forum: Making sense of the New Consumer Protection Act

CoreXalance will be hosting two interactive sessions on the new Consumer Protection Act (CPA), on the 23rd and 25th of March 2010. We have invited a legal expert, Nita van Zyl, to discuss the latest developments with regard to the CPA and the manner in which it will affect the way we do business. Nita, the legal representative of Media Credit Co-ordinators since 2001, specialises in commercial law and litigation and will be presenting both sessions in a question and answer format.

The CPA is intended to prevent exploitation and harm to consumers' rights, increase fairness and equality among consumers and to give them the information required to make good choices. The CPA was signed into law by the then South African President, Kgalema Motlanthe, on 29 April 2009 and will become effective in October 2010. Implementation of the CPA will require revising current policies and procedures and ensuring effective quality control for services rendered.

These sessions will give you the opportunity to ask your burning questions and make sense of how the CPA affects you and your company. The prices of both sessions include a breakfast on the 23rd, and a lunch on the 25th.

The first session, held on 23 March 2010, will focus on the key issues companies will face in adapting the new consumer credit regime, as introduced by the CPA. This workshop will give an overview of the sections in the CPA specifically relevant to finance, sales and credit control in the media industry. The main objective is to provide your company with guidelines on requirements for complying with the CPA.

The second session, held on 25 March 2010, will focus on how the CPA affects marketing practices and advertising in the media industry by imposing wide ranging rules, disclosures and prohibitions in the way that suppliers market and advertise their goods to consumers. This session will give an overview of the sections in the CPA specifically relevant to advertising and marketing practices. The main objective is to provide your company with guidelines on requirements for complying with the CPA.
