MTN scholarships for media leadership, management studies at Rhodes
There are two categories of scholarships -- one for the SPI's short-term business and editorial leadership courses and the other for the Institute's fulltime, one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Media Management (PDMM). All scholarships are for South Africans only.
The short-term scholarships are for working media people who wish to attend the SPI's Essentials of Newspaper Management (EONM) the Essentials of Broadcast Management (EOBM) and the Essentials of People Management (EPM) courses. Go to www.spiml.co.za for specific curriculum details of the three short courses and the PDMM.
Short courses
Each of the short courses runs at the SPI for five days. This year, the EONM will be held 30 March - 3 April and 7 - 11 September. The EOBM will be held 25 - 29 May and 2 - 6 November. The EPM is scheduled for 6 - 10 July and 23 - 27 November (check www.spiml.co.za for updates on the course date[s]).
Each short-term scholarship covers the course's full tuition fees, accommodation and breakfast in Grahamstown, flights to Port Elizabeth and back to a candidate's home town (eg Johannesburg) and transportation from Port Elizabeth Airport to Grahamstown and back there. The SPI provides lunch and dinners to all course participants but they must have adequate funds to cover their incidentals during the five-day course.
To motivate for the short-term scholarships, candidates should email a short CV in Word format and a motivational letter of about 500 words to SPI administrator Linda Snam (email ), stating why they think they qualify for the scholarships. The motivation should also state what candidates hope to do with the skills and knowledge they will gain from their chosen course when they return to their work place.
Honours degree
The scholarships for the PDMM, an honours degree-level qualification, cover the student's full course fees and accommodation at Rhodes University, books and other study materials, medical insurance, and travel costs. Applications for these scholarships will open later in 2009 and application details will be published on www.spiml.co.za at the time.
