New photography course at Stellenbosch Academy

Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, a registered private higher education institution specialising in visual arts, will be offering a new full-time one year certificate course in commercial photography from 2008. This course, which is accredited by the Council on Higher Education, will run alongside the Academy's three year BA course in Applied Design.

The new Certificate in Commercial Photography will prepare students for a career as a commercial photographer and cover a wide spectrum of content including wedding and event photography, advertising, portraiture, landscapes, photojournalism, illustration and documentary photography. The certificate course aims to equip students to generate revenue within the photographic industries. Towards this end, all technical aspects of digital photography, such as the various camera equipment, computer software, reproduction methods and studio work, will be covered in detail.

Students will be guided in the production of a general portfolio of work as well as a specialty portfolio of their choice, which can make them industry leaders in their field of specialisation.

The deadline for submission of application forms is 21 January 2008. Late applications will be assessed depending on availability. Registration will be on 25 January and orientation and commencement of classes on 28 January at the Academy's campus in Techno Park.

Information is available weekdays between 8h30 and 17:00 on 021 880 2623. Prospective students must submit a portfolio of work with their application. Details on portfolio requirements are available at www.stellenboschacademy.co.za under Photography Portfolio Requirements. The course fee is R41 000, including the use of Academy computer, studio and darkroom equipment. Feedback on applications will be given within 10 days of receipt of application portfolios. Student will require their own digital SLR camera (which can be purchased at the Academy during registration) and a passion for photographic imagery.

The Academy's decision to expand its educational offering, which coincides with the launch of its newly upgraded facilities in 2008, hails the start of a new era wherein the Academy is rapidly formalising its position as the boutique design Academy of choice within the magnificent Stellenbosch winelands.
