Summer school introduces schoolchildren to radio

MFM in conjunction with Stellenbosch University's Centre for Student Recruitment and Career Advice and Telematics services has just wrapped up its third radio Summer School.

From 12-16 December, young adults between 15 and 18 received radio training as well as training in other media platforms, at no cost to them. The end goal was to equip them with invaluable skills giving them an advantage in pursuing a career in radio. The training sessions included educating the learners in all areas of on-air presenting, producing, news reading, marketing, social media, sales, finances as well as on and off air television training.

Summer school introduces schoolchildren to radio

No other community radio station in South Africa has accomplished anything like the Summer School, enabling learners who do not have funds available to them to participate. The aim was to bring together schoolchildren, who had one thing in common, a passion for media.

“This campaign was born out of a passion to educate and for us to get more involved with our community. We are very proud of this initiative and we as MFM could not be happier with the outcomes of the Summer School. We achieved everything we hoped for and more. Friendship bonds were formed and we definitely uplifted and inspired our youth. Through inspiring the youth, we even reignited the passion of people who have been in the industry for a few years already,” said station manager, Charita van der Berg.

"They all walked away with invaluable experience and received a demo from Telematics services and MFM, showing off various abilities and potential. They all also received a certificate to illustrate the skills they have acquired throughout the training sessions. Special thanks go out to Pick n Pay Stellenbosch that sponsored lunch for the schoolchildren for the week.”
