Damelin ups NQF-aligned programmes for 2007

In the wake of the new changes to South Africa's education environment, Damelin recently announced that the majority of its programmes for 2007 are now aligned with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). This will ensure that the specific skills required by industries and commerce are consistently provided and should reduce the need for graduated students to gain experience before they become fully contributing members of the economy.

"Damelin has worked hard at leading the way in tertiary education in South Africa. Through this alignment, we remain committed to providing world-class education that is relevant to the people and industries of South Africa," says Damelin CEO Vivienne Velthuis.

Damelin is one of the first private tertiary institutions to align with the NQF for both its Higher Education (HE) and Further Education Training (FET) programmes, with the exception of programmes offered by its School of Media and Design Technology and Equestrian Academy. Alignment for these programmes is set for 2008, when all tertiary education providers are required to have their programmes aligned by.

Programmes offered by the School of Media and Design Technology are accredited internationally with Edexcel, the UK's largest awarding body, whose services include curriculum and qualifications development as well as certification.

Damelin will offer the new range of more that 200 HE and FET NQF-aligned programmes, both full- and part-time, through the following schools:

  • School of Business and Management;
  • School of Leisure and Lifestyle;
  • School of Information and Technology;
  • School of Banking and Insurance;and
  • the Faculty of Commerce.

"Our campuses have been through the rigorous process of accreditation. We have now been provisionally accredited with Umalusi as an FET provider, and conditionally accredited with the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) as an HE provider. Learners and parents are therefore assured of education that is relevant and of the highest quality. Our programmes are designed to make learners employable," concludes Velthuis.
