Search is on for South Africa's brightest young scientists
“Over the past 29 years, the expo has become South Africa's premier event for students who excel in science and technology,” says Dr Steve Lennon, MD Corporate Services Division. “As title sponsor of the expo, we have been surprised at the innovation and complexity of many of the projects, which bodes well for the technical future of the country. The determination, passion and fervour shown by children regarding science and technology has compelled Eskom to further reward the interest of young scientists, teachers and schools.
“The event attracts thousands of entrants and we hope that the number of entries will once again increase this year, particularly from girls. Last year saw a 15% increase of girl's entering compared to 2007, which is in line with the government's initiative of involving more women in the science and technology sector.
“The expo gives learners a unique opportunity to meet with like-minded inventors and scientists and showcase their ingenuity through projects in the fields of maths, science and technology.
“The top students from across South Africa will take part in the national finals at the University of Pretoria on 2-3 October 2009 where their work will be scrutinised by specialist judges and will be open to the public for viewing,” concludes Lennon.
