Retail industry scholarships launched

Firmly establishing the shopping centre industry as a professional force, the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) has announced its formation of an educational trust to fund a scholarship programme aimed both at promoting education and fostering career development in the industry.

“The scholarships, which are for the dedicated SACSC courses at the University of Pretoria, may be for the entire course fee, or a part of it, accommodation, meals and air fares,” explained the Council’s general manager, Tracey Fowler.

In addition, successful applicants will be registered free of charge as members of the SACSC for the year of the course.

Fowler said the SACSC Educational Trust would assist deserving individuals not normally eligible for financial support from other sources. “It’s intended to encourage and promote the attainment of professional education and to further the career development of those whose work is dedicated specifically to the shopping centre industry,” she said.

The Council has a range of educational programmes presented in conjunction with the University of Pretoria, which offers Certificates in Shopping Centre Management (CSCM) and The Fundamentals of Marketing a Shopping Centre (CFMSC), as well as an Advanced Certificate in Shopping Centre Leadership (ACSCL).

Applicants for the scholarships have to meet normal admission criteria for the SACSC courses and must be employed by an SACSC member company, or want to develop a new career in the shopping centre industry. Those in the industry looking for scholarships must also be able to show that they would not normally receive financial support from their employer for further study, or that the employer has no financial provision for training and development.

The closing date for applications for this year’s scholarships is June 30, to enable successful applicants to take the second CFMSC course for 2007 or the 2007 CSCM course. In succeeding years, the closing date will be September 30, and invitations for 2008 applications will be circulated later this year.
