Flying the flag for SA

The Education Department, together with the Department of Arts and Culture, has kicked off a nationwide campaign to inspire schools to fly the SA flag on a daily basis. They are supported in this drive by the International Marketing Council, established to further Brand South Africa.

Quoting Nelson Mandela, IMC CEO, Yvonne Johnston, says: "The flag is not a symbol of a political party, nor of a government but a possession of the people - the one thing that is literally and figuratively above all else, 'our flag'.

"The flag is now so much part of South Africa that it is not always remembered that its design was decided on at the very last minute, being proclaimed as such a bare seven days before it flew for the first time.

"It is the symbol of a proud new nation, its unity and diversity, its hope in the progress that has been made and is still being made, and the underpinning philosophy that we are all human beings, equal in all we do."

Johnston says this is the sense in which the new flag campaign should be seen and as such the IMC fully supports it.
