Total food, bev income up 6.2% in Jan

Total income generated by SA's food and beverages industry‚ measured in nominal terms‚ rose by 6.2% year on year in January‚ Statistics SA's food and beverages report showed on Monday, 19 March 2013.

The food and beverages survey is conducted monthly and covers a sample of public and private enterprises involved in the preparation of meals and drinks for immediate consumption in the country. It is used to monitor trends in the food and beverages industry.

The results of the survey are used to compile estimates of the tourism satellite accounts and the gross domestic product and its components.

The highest annual growth rate was recorded for bar sales (11.0%) followed by other income (7.6%) and food sales (5.7%).

The highest annual growth rate in January this year was recorded for takeaway and fast-food outlets‚ which contributed 3.6 percentage points‚ followed by catering services with a 0.8 of a percentage point contribution‚ and restaurants and coffee shops‚ contributing 1.8 percentage points.

Total income increased by 8.8% in the three months ended January this year compared with the three months ended January last year.

The main contributors to this increase were takeaway and fast-food outlets with 4.6 percentage points; and restaurants and coffee shops‚ with a 3.3 percentage points contribution.
