Food and beverages income up 9.1% y/y in Nov

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry in SA increased by 9.1% in November last year compared with November 2011‚ data from Statistics SA (Stats SA) showed on Monday, 21 January 2013.

Positive annual growth rates were recorded for bar sales (18.3%)‚ food sales (8.1%)‚ and other income (7.0%).

In terms of sectors‚ the main contributor to the annual growth rate of 9.1% in total income was takeaway and fast-food outlets with a 15.5% y/y rise and contributing 5.2 percentage points; followed by restaurants and coffee shops with a 6.7% increase and contributing 3.2 percentage points; and catering services‚ with 3.9% and 0.7 of a percentage point contribution.

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry alone increased by 8.4% for the three months ended November last year compared with the same period in 2011.

Takeaway and fast-food outlets‚ and restaurants and coffee shops incomes contributed the most to the 8.4% quarterly rise in total income‚ Stats SA reported.

Positive annual growth rates were recorded for bar sales (12.8%)‚ other income (11.8%)‚ and food sales (7.8%).
