Patients at Lowveld Hospital, Nelspruit get Kauai food

In what is described as a South African first, the patients of the Lowveld Private Hospital in Nelspruit will not have to beg visitors to bring them good food, as they will be receiving healthy fresh food from the new onsite Kauai store, designed to serve both visitors and inmates.

"We feel honoured that the hospital has chosen the company as the sole food provider for their hospital patients, realising the health and healing benefits of nourishing foods," says John Berry, founder and chief of innovations of Kauai. "The company firmly believes that what you eat determines your quality of life and this is even more so for those people who are recovering from illnesses and surgeries that need to replenish and regenerate their bodies with healthy nutritious foods."

"At the hospital we strive to provide a 5-star service to our patients. By aligning ourselves with this brand and product, we break away from the traditional approach to food served by hospitals in South Africa. Hospital food is traditionally blunt and uninspiring. We identified the serving of fresh, quality and healthy food as a strategic value driver in our hospital's value chain," says Armand van der Merwe, spokesperson for the Lowveld Hospital.

"In portraying ourselves as the face of the modern new look hospital ('fresh', customer orientated, healthy etc), we looked for a strategic partner, who was able to provide us with the quality product required and who is perceived by the public as such. Kauai is currently the leading brand name in 'healthy, fresh quality food' and the supplier of choice to the new modern generation of South Africans."

The new store embraces eco-friendly initiatives, such as counter tops made from renewable resources and the new Wega Greenline Cappuccino machine that uses 47% less electricity than normal machines. Timber-framed boards have replaced all plastic menu boards to give the store a true Island feel.

This store brings the number of stores nationally to 110, with another 12 stores planned to open in 2012. For more information, go to www.kauai.co.za, on Facebook and Twitter: @KauaiSA.
