The competition started in Port Elizabeth and will be held in Durban from 28 September to 1 October, Gauteng from 3 to 6 November and concluding in Cape Town.
The judging will be based on the preparation of four espressos, four cappuccinos and four signature drinks made to exact standards and within a 15 minute performance. Judges determine their scores on each of the beverage's taste, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill and overall presentation as well as how each contestant illustrates their understanding and knowledge of coffee throughout their preparation and presentation of their signature drinks.
The top six finalists will advance to the national competition taking place in March 2012 where they will compete for the title of 2012 South African Barista Champion. The winner of the national competition will be sent by SCASA to represent South Africa at the World Barista Championships. This global competition focuses on promoting excellence in coffee preparation and advancing the Barista profession.
This year SCASA will also host the Cup Tasters Competition and Latte Art Competition, which are some of the new World Coffee Competitions hosted by the World Coffee Events. Ciro Beverage Solutions baristas will also be competing in these competitions.
