Food, beverages industry income down 0.9%

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry in South Africa was down 0.9% to 3.011 billion rand in June 2011 compared with the corresponding period last year, Statistics SA said on Monday, 22 August 2011.

The main contributors to this decrease were bar sales at -6.1% and contributing -0.6 of a percentage point, and food sales at -0.3% and contributing -0.2 of a percentage point.

This annual negative growth rate in total income was driven by restaurants and coffee shops, the data showed. The decrease was to a large extent counteracted by the increases recorded for takeaway and fast-food outlets and other catering services.

However, the total income generated by the food and beverages industry in the second quarter 2011 increased by 3.2% to 9.1 billion rand compared with the same period last year. The main contributor to this increase was food sales at 3.9% and contributing 3.4 percentage points.

The contribution in the second quarter 2011 was mainly driven by takeaway and fast-food outlets, followed by restaurants and coffee shops, and other catering services.
