An SMS was sent to users on eXactmobile's database with the request to reply with the word "help" in order to donate R10 towards the World Health Organisation's efforts. The donation is then deducted directly from the user's regular monthly mobile phone account or from the contributor's pay-as-you-go credit.
With just over half of the expected 2.1 million SMS's sent out so far, the total raised has exceeded the R1 million mark! The projected final total will be in the region of R2 million. All the proceeds from this campaign will be paid over to the WHO in full to support their on-going recovery efforts.
"eXactmobile is extremely proud of the generosity of our clients and the amount raised thus far is a credit to them and to South Africans in general. We are delighted to have already exceeded the target we set ourselves. We are especially proud we will have raised sums equal or even in excess of some of the largest corporations in South Africa. We would like to thank Vodacom in particular for the support they have given this initiative," said Davin Mole, CEO of eXactmobile.
WHO stresses that urgent action is needed to address the emerging public health needs of those affected by the earthquake and the resultant Tsunami in Southeast Asia. Between three and five million people in the region are unable to access the basic requirements they need to stay alive - clean water, adequate shelter, food, sanitation and healthcare. To address the immediate public healthcare needs and respond to this major catastrophe, the WHO estimates that it will need a total of US$ 66 million.
