Trace Mobile, the mobile service powered by Cell C, targeted specifically at the South African youth turned a year old in October and has now hit the 1.1 million subscriber mark. “It’s been a tough, long road, but through strategic planning and execution we managed to pull off our four year projection in just one year,” says Indresen Chetty, md for Trace Mobile SA. “We employ approximately 150 foot soldiers taken from disadvantaged communities and enable them to become entrepreneurs by distributing the Trace Mobile starter pack.”

A big part of the service’s success in acquiring over a million customers is having a product that is attractive and speaks to the youth market as well as ensuring marketing efforts and distribution are in sync. Trace CEO, Olivier Laouchez is excited about what this means for the group’s endeavours across the continent: “This record number confirms the impact of the brand and of its innovative services in the mobile and digital African economy. The group confirms its status as the preferred brand among new generations in Africa.”
