Natural gas will be procured from Walvis Gas Port (WGP), an incorporated Namibian gas business. WGP will be responsible for securing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Excelerate Gas Marketing, an established LNG player with over 75 master agreements in place with various LNG suppliers and manufacturers.
The Walvis Bay port has been selected due to its ideal location for a floating storage facility. The natural gas will be stored on a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that will be permanently moored in the port and extracted for use by the power plant to generate electricity for the Erongo Region and wider Namibia.
In addition, there will be the opportunity for other natural gas consumers such as independent power producers, factories, mines and domestic users to utilise natural gas directly for heating, reducing costs as well as environmental releases.
The power plant, located behind Dune 7 in Walvis Bay in the new earmarked heavy industrial zone, will utilise LM 6000 gas turbines sourced from US-based GE.
