SABC application for regional TV service enters first hearing

The South African Broadcasting Corporation will appear before Icasa on 05 October 2004 in Polokwane for its first hearing regarding the application for the regional TV service SABC4. The SABC made its written application in December last year.

The SABC has a legislative obligation to apply for public regional television services as provided for in Section 22A of the Act.

SABC4 will broadcast in Setswana, Setotho, Sepedi, Xitsonga, Tshivenda, Afrikaans and English.

Although increased African language programming is central to their purpose, the regional public television services should not be viewed only as providing a mechanism for increased language provision. They would equally be an important point of delivery for a range of public interest programming, thereby assisting the SABC in the collective fulfilment of its extensive mandate.

The SABC welcomes this opportunity to submit its application and looks forward to engaging the Authority and all stakeholders in the process going forward.
