The ‘Bornfrees' of South Africa

On Sunday, 11 November 2007, at 6.05pm, e.tv launches a new documentary series, Bornfrees, investigating the lives of young people born during the advent of democracy in 1994. The show focuses on 11 children from various backgrounds and cultures and was filmed when they turned 10. It explores their perspectives on life in South Africa.

Some of the questions being tackled are: How aware are they of the pain and unrighteous privileges apartheid brought, have they read about it in history books or are their parents perhaps victims of this era? Do they touch sides with racism? What does democracy mean to them? Has escalating crime hurt them or their families? Has the reality of AIDS hit home? What are their hopes and dreams in this country of endless opportunity? These are but a few of the questions tackled in the series.

Bornfrees follows these children through a day in their lives, from the moment they wake up in the morning to just before bedtime. The interviewees relate their funniest stories, heartbreaking tales and they share their opinion truthfully and sometimes quite bluntly.

Bornfrees is based on the British documentary series 7-UP.
