Canal Walk to host Fuel2Grow campaign

The Ikamva Labantu organisation will be hosting a fun day at Canal Walk in Cape Town on Saturday, 7 November 2015 in aid of their Fuel2Grow campaign. The Fuel2Grow campaign aims to highlight the need to feed children nutritious meals.

Ikamva Labantu (future of our nation) is a community-driven non-governmental, non-profit organisation that delivers social support services in township communities in Cape Town.

"Food insecurity in South Africa is real. Around 3.3 million children live in households where there is food insecurity - children can't play, learn, dream, or be inspired when their immediate need is food to fill their tummy. They need fuel, hence the Fuel2Grow campaign," says Ananda Nel, Director at Ikamva Labantu.

According to Nel, they aim to raise R2.5m over the next four months. "It will enable us to feed 650 children in our programmes throughout 2016. R15 a day provides one nutritious cooked meal, R75 provides meals for a week, R300 for a month and R4,000 for a year. If we can't provide our kids with at least one meal a day, our efforts to inspire and educate them will be lost as their focus will be on the physical hunger they are experiencing."

Play, learn and engage

The aim of the Canal Walk promotion is firstly to create a space at the event for children to play, learn and engage. "We want to show parents that a child can only be a child if one of their most important needs, namely nutrition, is addressed. It will be our first shopping centre promotion ever. We'd like to thank the Canal Walk Foundation for their involvement and excellent support of NGOs working in township communities. It is a well-known brand and we're honoured to be associated with it.

"With this promotion, we hope to raise awareness of our Fuel2Grow campaign and want people to fall in love with us as an organisation. Everyone can make a difference. By making even the smallest contribution to the Fuel2Grow campaign, you assist us to provide children with fuel to grow," Nel says.
