PetroSA funds an eco-schools programme
"We understand the need to preserve our environment for future generations," said Kaizer Nyatsumba, PetroSA's head of corporate affairs and shared services. "The beauty of the programme lies in the fact that it exposes young people to the importance of responsible environmental custodianship,"
Launched in 2003, the programme is offered by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa and the World Wildlife Fund. It accredits schools that make a commitment to continuously improve their environmental performance. PetroSA announced that it intends investing the R4.5 million over a three-year period. 64 of the 650 South African schools that received an Eco-Schools award for their efforts in 2011 were honoured with an International Eco-Schools flag for developing and sustaining their environmental projects over a five-year period.
Award recipients range from under resourced schools like Carshalton Farm School in Mooi River to well-resourced schools like the Virginia Preparatory in Durban North. When schools register with the programme, teachers and learners commit to bolster environmental learning and action by choosing relevant themes. According to Allafrica.com, the number of schools that have registered with the programme has grown from 100 in 2003 to over 1100 in 2011. The funding forms part of PetroSA's corporate social responsibility efforts.
