Witbank's clean-up sets example

Cleaning up Mandela Street in Witbank was the focus this September. In the spirit of community and in support of the annual Clean Up SA campaign, a team of local cleaners literally hit the street picking up waste along the 2km stretch of road. Undeterred to get the job done, the team forged along, separating the items they picked up into piles for recycling.

While The Ridge is proud of its Green Team's accomplishment, they are appealing to the community to be more conscious about managing their waste and protecting the environment. They were astonished that while they worked, passersby in cars and on foot continued littering along the road. The community is encouraged to take pride in their surroundings and to avoid being part of the problem of environmental pollution and degradation.

"By keeping your streets and parks clean, and recycling household waste, you can make a valuable contribution to reducing the impact of modern day living on the environment. We all have a responsibility to take care of the environment and our precious natural resources," urges Maureen Kivits, The Ridge's general manager.

Items such as glass, cardboard, aluminium (cold drinks tins), plastic and metal can be recycled and reused. Look for recycling stations at the supermarket or contact the municipality to find out about recycling initiatives that you can be part of.
