The Business Day report says that the costs could be significantly higher than originally estimated, and master mariner and director at Norton Rose, Malcolm Hartwell, says that they could soar. If the vessel is holed and cannot be refloated, it might have to be cut up in situ.
The tanker is apparently not insured and is carrying about 420 000 litres of fuel. The costs of refloating the vessel and removing the fuel will be borne by the government.
