Man bust for abalone worth R1m

PRETORIA: A man was arrested for possession of perlemoen (abalone) worth about R1m in Somerset West, on Monday, 16 February.

The driver of the vehicle, a 26-year-old man, was transporting abalone from Buffelsjag to Cape Town before he was stopped by police to search the car.

"Upon searching the vehicle the members recovered 15 bags of shucked abalone. It amounted to 1 958 units with a street value estimated at approximately R1 million," Western Cape Police said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates Court today.
