KFM 94.5 to be 'taken over'

The Kfm 94.5 studios will be 'taken over' by young people of the Western Cape on June 16 in celebration of Youth Day. The station will say goodbye to its illustrious team of presenters and support staff for a day, as they hand over the airwaves for 16 hours to young Grade 11 and 12 learners, who were all selected from schools in and around the Western Cape.

"This campaign was born out of a passion to educate and get involved with our community. No station has attempted an event of this magnitude and we are proud to be a part of an initiative that uplifts and inspires our youth!" comments Felicia Roman, Managing Director of Kfm 94.5.

The response to an on-air call for those wanting to participate, surpassed the expectations of the Kfm 94.5 team, with more than 500 applications received. The list was narrowed down to 75 learners who received a call back for an audition. From there, the station selected 42 learners who have been receiving intensive and grueling training over weekends before the final cut of 27 was announced.

"It is clear that the interest in commercial broadcasting is alive and well. We are very excited and proud of the standard and experience that these talented young people have already mastered in such a short time period. All of the learners will walk away with invaluable experience, as well as also each receiving a certificate to illustrate the skills they have acquired throughout the training sessions," says Roman.

The training sessions include educating the learners in all areas of on-air presenting, producing, news reading, marketing, sound engineering, music compilation, copywriting and producing. The learners had several sessions in which to master the art of live broadcasting to provide them with the necessary confidence needed to carry off an entertaining two hour slot, which will be broadcast to approximately 1.2 million listeners.
It is not the end of the road for those learners who did not make the top 27, as they have been invited to assist the marketing team to ensure the event's successful off-air promotion.

"This is a unique opportunity for those interested in a career in broadcasting as they will all walk away with the experience of having worked at the Western Cape's biggest and most celebrated radio station," says Roman.
