Radio Pretoria gets new licenses from ICASA

After 17 months of negotiations, new license applications and hard work, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has informed Radio Pretoria that new community radio licenses were approved and granted for the eight Radio Pretoria transmitters in Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga and Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

These transmitters are licensed as Radio Wolkberg, Radio Ysterberg, Radio Naboom, Radio Kransberg, Radio Dagbreek, Radio Tafelkop, Radio Magaliesberg and Radio Drakensberg.

The newly licensed transmitters will operate as sister stations of Radio Pretoria and will in due course, and under management and guidance from Radio Pretoria as the mother station, develop their own identities as community broadcasters.

Radio Pretoria will appoint separate board of directors from the various communities for each of the community stations and provide leadership to obtain:

      • Independence

      • Improvement of broadcast infrastructure
      • Development of revenue streams

      • Production of local content

Radio Pretoria will continue to provide key programme content to the sister stations within the guidelines from the broadcast authority.

The granting of broadcast rights and five-year community broadcast licenses to all eight sister stations allows Radio Pretoria and the respective stations to make the necessary investments in broadcast equipment and to ensure an uninterrupted, high quality and full stereo signal to all transmitters.

"In the months ahead, we will call on our listeners to help us make this possible. We thank our listeners and supporters in advance for their assistance," says Willie Spies, MD Radio Pretoria.

"It is our primary vision to be the number one community radio station in the Afrikaner community. This breakthrough is therefore an important milestone on the road to achieve this vision. We thank the listeners for enjoying this good news with us and we wish every listener only the best and promise that we will continue to bring you many years of growth and listening pleasure."

Earlier this month, Radio Pretoria received the prestigious MTN Radio Awards for the station with the most loyal listeners as well as the station receiving the most votes in the SMS voting competition.
