50 young adults join summer radio school

MFM 92.6, a youth radio station broadcasting in the greater Stellenbosch community, the Stellenbosch University Telematic services and Eduloan have accepted 50 young adults between the ages of 16-18, who will receive radio and training in other media platforms during December 2014.

The end goal is to equip them with invaluable skills giving them an advantage in pursuing a career in radio. The training sessions includes educating the learners in all areas of on-air presenting, producing, news reading, marketing, social media, sales, finances as well as on-and off air television training.

Every year, the radio station accepts two groups of applicants that are put through an intense three-month training programme where they are schooled in every aspect of radio, providing a platform for aspiring radio presenters to get a 'foot up' in a highly competitive and closed off market.

The station wanted to be more involved in the community and therefore offered this opportunity to more people. The response received to its on-air call for those wanting to participate, surpassed its expectations. The list was narrowed down to 50 learners who were accepted and who will be participating in this short course that the station is offering the learners free of charge.

"This campaign was born out of a passion to educate and for us to get more involved with our community. We are proud of this initiative and hope that it will that uplift and inspire our youth," says Station Manager, Charita van der Berg. "This is a unique opportunity for those interested in a career in broadcasting and all the learners will walk away with invaluable experience and a certificate to illustrate the skills they have acquired throughout the training sessions."
