Own-branded radio station for wine estate

Spier Radio, which went live on 1 September 2006, offers Spier shuttle passengers a personalised broadcast en-route to various places, giving them cultural and historical reports, music, and valuable tourist information.

The special broadcasts are a result of a deal between Spier and Tourism Radio for the development of a customised location-based broadcast system, after Spier's brand director Derek Carelse met with and Tourism Radio sales manager Damian Dingwall at the Tourism Indaba held in Durban earlier this year.

Says Carelse, "This is a wonderful added value bonus for Spier guests and for tourism in Stellenbosch. Areas of interest will be highlighted to guests as they drive past, which will encourage them to stop and have a look. This means our neighbours will feel the benefit of this initiative too."

The station not only provides Spier's guests with historical and anecdotal information about the areas through which they are being driven, but is also a system that can be adapted to give them messages from the GM of the Village Hotel at Spier, upon arrival and departure, and highlights events from the estate's calendar.

The unit uses a GPS system which, when activated, is able to monitor progress along the journey.
