Randall Abrahams says goodbye to SABC

Randall Abrahams, general manager: public commercial services Radio SABC announced on Thursday, 15 June 2006, that he would be leaving the SABC at the end of June to pursue personal business interests in the media and entertainment sector. His portfolio of stations consists of 5FM, Good Hope FM and Metro FM.

Comments Abrahams on his departure, "I believe that I have achieved much of what I set out to do my current radio portfolio at the SABC and made a decision some time ago that I wished to extend my personal horizons in the media landscape.

"Media and entertainment is an exciting place to be right now, given the huge digital revolution underway and it is one of the areas I would like to play a role in."

Abrahams joined the SABC from youth radio station YFM, where as station manager, he was part of the start-up management team of one of the radio industry's major success stories.

Abrahams, who has headed the SABC's commercial radio portfolio for the past four years, has overseen a number of successes during his tenure, according to the broadcaster:

  • Cape Town Station Good Hope FM has turned around from its loss making declining audience position to a profitable status with audience growth of 20%
  • commercial music station 5FM has posted its best revenue figures in its history, and
  • Metro FM has consolidated its position as the market leader in its segment
