Breath of Fresh air at 5FM

5FM finally officially announced its new line up - the subject of much debate over the past few months - yesterday, Wednesday 31 May: Gareth Cliff will be hosting the breakfast show vacated by Mark Gillman and DJ Fresh will take over Cliff's afternoon drive show from July 2006.

The new line up was announced at a mock-wrestling match to determine who 'got' the drive time-show.

"I'm really excited about the fact that radio is changing the way South Africa has changed. I'm especially thrilled about Fresh joining 5FM... We're both looking forward to giving young South Africans some really relevant radio listening," said Cliff.

From 3 July 2006, South Africans will wake up to Gareth Cliff for breakfast, 6am to 9am. Newcomer DJ Fresh (ex-YFM) will be moving into Cliff's afternoon slot (4pm - 7pm, weekdays).

"It's show time come 3 July... Let the games - and a new 5FM era - begin!" proclaimed Fresh.

While Cliff might make some gag into their cornflakes at the news, there is no doubt he has had a meteoric rise through the airwaves, starting in the breakfast slot on 702 Talk Radio a few years back.

DJ Fresh spread his grooves at YFM for over eight years, where he was responsible for making the breakfast show one of the most popular morning slots in SA. Fresh has also established various scholarships, in association with various tertiary institutions, to assist youth from all walks of life to realise their dreams. Fresh is also well known for a few very popular compilation and house mix-albums as well as other charity drives, which have just cemented his respected status and popularity.

Other line-up announcements for 5FM's 2006 slate of changes, including more specifics on Fresh and Cliff's new shows, will be confirmed by 30 June.

5FM currently has a past seven-day audience of 1.3 million, 20 - 30-year-old cosmopolitan South Africans.
