Petrol up by 23 cents

All grades of petrol are set to increase by 23 cents a litre this week, said the Energy Department on Friday, 28 October 2011.

A litre of both Diesel 0.05% Sulphur and Diesel 0.005% Sulphur is set to increase by 36 cents.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin is set to increase by 41 cents and the single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin will increase by 55 cents a litre.

The Maximum Retail Price for LPGAS will increase by 43 cents.

A litre of petrol will cost R10.77 cents in Gauteng and R10.47 in the coast when the prices come into effect on Wednesday, 2 November.

"During the period under review, the average international product prices of Petrol, Diesel and Illuminating Paraffin decreased. The average Rand/US Dollar exchange rate weakened when compared to the previous period," said the department.

It added that the average Rand/US Dollar exchange rate for the period 30 September 2011 to 27 October 2011 was 8.0012 compared to 7.5657 during the previous period.

"The deterioration of the Rand against the US Dollar increased the contribution to the Basic Fuels Price on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 33.97 cents a litre, 35.82 cents a litre and 35.58 cents a litre respectively," it said.

In October the petrol price rose by between 36 and 37 cents a litre.
