Emirates SkyCago continues supply of commodities to and from SA

As of early April, Emirates SkyCargo has commenced cargo services to South Africa, with two passenger freighter flights per week between Dubai and Johannesburg. This week, Emirates SkyCargo will operate five flights dedicated to medical supplies coming into South Africa.

For the financial year, 2019/2020 Emirates SkyCargo helped export over 22,000 tonnes of cargo from South Africa, with the top export commodities being over 7,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables, over 4,000 tonnes consisting of seafood and 1800 tonnes comprising of different types of flowers with the top export destinations being UAE, Spain and the UK.

The carrier continues with its commitment to facilitate the flow of essential goods across all markets to ensure that goods such as food and medical supplies are transported to destinations where they are needed the most amidst the global pandemic; and has deployed a range of measures, including additional freighter flights, and using connecting road feeder services to help transport essential cargo such as pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and equipment, perishables, and other raw materials to the UAE and other global destinations.

Between January and the start of April, the air cargo carrier globally transported more than 90,000 tonnes of perishables, over 20,000 tonnes of pharmaceuticals and around 3,000 tonnes of protective supplies including face masks for combatting Covid-19.

The carrier currently operates flights to 51 destinations globally, out of which 19 cities are served by the Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 777 freighter aircraft offering up to 100 tonnes of capacity per flight and 38 destinations are served by dedicated cargo flights on Emirates’ Boeing 777 passenger aircraft offering up to 50 tonnes belly capacity.

The main commodities transported on the charter flights are medical supplies including face masks, protective covers, sanitisers, equipment for hospitals in addition to pharmaceuticals, raw materials and spare parts...
