Qantas, grounded then back to the skies

First there is a protracted strike at Qantas in Australia. Then the company announces that it has grounded its entire fleet of aircraft in an unprecedented move that leaves about 70 000 passengers all over the world stranded.

The New Age says that the industrial action was called off by Fair Work Australia after a marathon meeting that ended early on Monday morning.

Then the government steps in and orders the company and its striking workers to resolve their disputes and to get their planes back into the air. Then, Qantas started flying again.

The announcement that it will return to the skies must have been a relief for the tens of thousands of passengers who were left in limbo since Saturday when the airline locked out all staff and grounded the fleet.

Meanwhile Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has apologised to all passengers for the grounding of the fleet but many thousands of passengers have vowed never to fly with Qantas again.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard took the rare step of appointing a workplace mediator to bring an end to the industrial action.

Unions have been protesting over Qantas' plans to axe at least 1 000 jobs and to establish two new Qantas airlines focused on Asia.
