Ulundi airport to be upgraded

The Prince Mangosuthu Airport at Ulundi is to benefit from a multi-million rand investment to bring an economic and tourism boost to the people of KwaZulu-Natal. The airport will be extensively upgraded and refurbished.

Business Day reports that the KwaZulu-Natal government has transferred ownership of the airport to the Zululand district municipality. It has not been fully functional since the province named Pietermaritzburg as its capital.

The Zululand district municipality has been given a R30-million grant to restore structural defects in the terminal building, improve fire-fighting resources and restore the runway.

A new airline, Federal Air, is being planned and it will operate a direct flight between Ulundi and Pietermaritzburg. Plans are underway to introduce direct flights to Johannesburg and Durban in the future.
