Soweto youth centre gets 35 computers
The communications service provider's managing director for Consumer Services and Retail, Manelisa Mavuso, visited the Othandweni Family Care Centre in Mfolo South, Soweto, on Friday, 5 April 2013. On behalf of Telkom, he handed over five desktop computers and 30 tablet computers, which will be housed at the centre's computer laboratory.
Mavuso said he hoped that the access to technology will advance the quality of education for the children at the centre.
"There is no programme more constructive than an educational one. In the digital age, a big part of quality education is delivered through the use of ICTs.
Not only will access to technology improve education levels of the children, but it will help socialise and prepare them for employment in an increasingly digital world," he said.
Over the last three years, the Telkom Foundation has donated R300 000 to the centre.
The contribution to Othandweni was initiated through the Telkom Foundation's Adopt-A-Project Programme. The programme encourages Telkom executives to patron a community project in various ways through financial support, time and skills contribution.
Othandweni offers residential care for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected. It caters for 90 children from birth to 18 years of age.
