BPL logistics engineer wins competition

Ben Walters, logistics engineer at Bidvest Panalpina Logistics (BPL), has been named the 2015 South African winner of the Young Freight Forwarder of the Year competition.

Organised by the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Association (FIATA), this is the first time a South African winner has come from the same company for two consecutive years.

Competition entrants must be under 32 years old and are required to make a detailed analysis of an export and import operation. The analysis must include a wide range of possible solutions and plan for contingencies while meeting increasingly stringent demands of importers and exporters.

Walters' entry clearly reflects that he is part of BPL's new generation of third party logistics service providers who are adapting to changing market needs while enhancing the supply chain processes of their organisations with innovation, transparency and traceability. In this new environment it is the ability to provide end to end solutions through optimal deployment of logistics, IT systems, statutory compliance, risk management, financial instruments and cross functional integration.

Learning organisation

BPL's Fortunate Mboweni was the overall winner of the global competition in 2014. BPL is quietly confident that Walters' winning of the South African leg of the competition will culminate at this year's FIATA World Congress in Taipei, where he will be announced as the overall winner.

This confidence is based on the fact that, in enhancing its position as a market leader in this industry through its accredited academy, BPL is creating a learning organisation where deep levels of experience within the company are welded with leading edge industry developments and learning technology to produce an unbeatable development weapon.
