ISS launch Crime and Justice Hub
The crime hub viewer can access 150 demographic datasets in order to determine crime rates and trends in different areas, like burglary rates and proximity to police stations. The Hub was officially launched at an annual crime and justice conference hosted by the ISS.
According to Gareth Newham from the ISS, the Hub allows users and researchers to print out complete demographic profiles on suburbs and areas, like the number of people living in formal households in that area and how much they earn on average. The system has also sophisticated tools, such as the ability to study inequality levels, between areas, for example between Alexandra and Sandton. The hub also provides studies on good and bad policing and the ability to report on crime and corruption, as well as good policing.
Users could pull a complete crime map and add different parameters at the click of a button, Fin24 reports. Apart from safety tips, the hub could also be useful for holidaymakers looking for safe destinations this festive season. While violent crime rates in SA had "levelled out", house and business robberies were increasing, Newham said.
