ID fraud costs taxpayers millions

Identity fraud is costing South African taxpayers millions of rands particularly as foreigners are claiming social welfare grants even though they are not entitled to them according to a report published in Business Report.

It says that 59 393 work permits were issued to Zimbabweans who had fled their country in the first quarter of this year. The Department of Home Affairs told Parliament yesterday that outsiders are "lining their pockets with social welfare grants".

The ID fraud appears to involve tens of thousands of Zimbabweans, along with many others from Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. Business Report says that a spot check at the Musina border post in December showed that 3 000 Zimbabweans were caught with fraudulent ID books.
