BlackBerry disruptions getting worse

Disruptions to the BlackBerry services - including instant messaging and e-mail - occurred in countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) on Tuesday, 11 October 2011, but these service interruptions have now spread to parts of Latin America according to a brief statement from Research in Motion (RIM).

IOL says that BlackBerry users in South Africa again reported intermittent service interruptions, more than a day after a server crashed in the UK, halting mail and instant messaging services.

RIM said in a terse statement that it was working on the problem but gave no explanation for the interruption of services.

The statement from the company simply said that some users in EMEA countries as well as those in India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina are experiencing messaging and browsing delays. The company said it was working to restore normal services as quickly as possible.

RIM has been under increasing pressure from its shareholders as it loses market share in the smartphone market to HTC, Apple and Samsung. It received a lack-lustre reception to its PlayBook tablet device that was designed to challenge Apple iPad.
