SABC needs about R6-billion to stay afloat

The South African Broadcasting Corporation needs R6-billion over the next three years to stay in business according to the report submitted to Parliament according to media reports today.

Times Live says that the corporation has failed to implement the conditions imposed on it by government when it bailed out the corporation with a R1,47-billion guarantee last year.

The Star reports that ANC MP, Suzan Tsebe - who is part of the National Assembly's communications portfolio committee - says that while the SABC paints a rosy picture about its performance the report from the Treasury tells a completely different story.

It says that the turnaround plan was not complete and the business plans for a 24-hour news channel and dedicated sports channel, along with plans for migration to a digital platform were still outstanding.

Times Live reports Deputy Communications Minister, Obed Bapela saying that the British Broadcasting Corporation is funded entirely by government and that "this is a model we have to consider".
