Shoprite one of Africa's largest employers
The Shoprite Group of Companies has become one of the largest employers on the African continent, now employing 100 000 people. This milestone was reached with the employment of William Paulse, who is a liquor controller at the N1 City Checkers Liquor Shop in Cape Town.
It followed a successful store opening programme in the financial year ending June 2012 which created more than 7 000 jobs, equalling the amount of jobs created in the previous financial year. In the past financial year the group added 90 new outlets to its store network, of which 61 were supermarkets. Almost 99% of staff members of Shoprite are recruited from the communities where stores are located in the 17 countries in which the group does business. The company now operates 1 334 outlets under its various brands in Africa.
