Four suspects appear in court on bombing charges

PRETORIA: Four suspects linked to the bombing of a Correctional Services truck appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Friday, 26 October 2012.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Naville Malila, the four have been charged with murder, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and illegal possession of explosives.

"The case has been postponed to allow police to further conduct investigations into the matter," Brigadier Malila said.

The case has been postponed until the 27 November.

Brigadier Malila said they had still not established what explosive device was used in the attempted escape.

The bombing took place on the Soweto Highway when 36 inmates were being transported back to the Johannesburg prison, known as Sun City, from the Randburg Magistrate's Court.

Three inmates have since died as a result of the bombing, which is believed to have been an escape attempt.

Four other inmates are in a critical condition in hospital while ten others sustained minor injuries.

Earlier, Correctional services Commissioner Tom Moyane, said they were not ruling out the possibility of an inside job with regards to the bombing of the prison van.

Police preliminary investigations indicated that the blast was part of an escape plot and two prisoners who tried to escape were recaptured.

The Department Correctional Services, together with the South African Police Service (SAPS), are investigating the incidence.
