Corrupt public servants pocket R300-million

Times Live says that fraud and misconduct by public service workers cost the government about R300-million and at least R150-million of that will never be recovered.

The shocking figures were revealed by Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu who said that 1 135 financial misconduct cases were reported at national and local government levels in 2009-2010, according to Times Live.

Eastern Cape reported the highest level of financial misconduct with R35-million in losses, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with R17-million, Mpumalanga losing R16-million and Western Cape unable to account for R6-million.

Sisulu says that the 218 employees found guilty of fraud were in the process of repaying the money to government. Only two officials were imprisoned, reports Times Live.
