KZN Premier resigns

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has announced his resignation from the premiership of the province with effect from 31 August.

Mkhize has been a premier since May 2009. He is taking up his full time position as the Treasurer-General of the ANC at the party's headquarters, Luthuli House, on 1 September.

Addressing reporters at a media briefing on Thursday, he said after careful consideration of his dual role as premier and Treasurer General of the ANC, he came to the conclusion that, "it was untenable."

Mkhize is credited with having turned the finances of the province around - from a R3bn overdraft into a surplus within three years. He also made strides in the fight against HIV and Aids and corruption in the province.

"I have no regrets," he told the media briefing. He said he owed a debt of gratitude to his colleagues in the executive who have supported him during his tenure.

"I was humbled by the honour to have served the people of KwaZulu-Natal as their premier. I believe we have had a good show. We have managed a shift in the mindset of leaders and civil servants from paper pushers to actual service delivery," he said.

He assured the people of KwaZulu-Natal that he leaves a rich legacy and there is no need to panic as the ANC will manage the process of transition smoothly.

Meanwhile, Education MEC Senzo Mchunu was sworn in as acting premier by the KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Chiman Patel as Mkhize is going on a state visit with President Jacob Zuma in the next five days. Mchunu's acting stint as premier comes to an end on 27 August.

The outgoing premier praised his colleague Senzo Mchunu and other MECs in the KwaZulu-Natal executive, saying they were dedicated servants of the people. He also thanked President Jacob Zuma for his support - from appointing him to the position to supporting him throughout his tenure.
