Start buying e-tags - minister

Gauteng motorists should start buying e-tags, Transport Minister Dikobe Martins said. Martins was launching October Transport Month in Soweto.

He said that while consultations were ongoing with interested parties, motorists should buy e-tags, with which they would be billed when the system becomes operational.

"People can start buying e-tags. We will meet with Cosatu this week and an announcement will be made," Martins said, refusing to elaborate.

The Constitutional Court last week set aside the Pretoria High Court's April ruling putting the brakes on the e-tolling system for Gauteng freeways.

Martins said this year Transport Month would focus on road safety at school level.

He also said his department was concerned about the levels of corruption, including with driver's licenses, which contributes to the high rate of road accidents.
