Gulf countries to protect marine environment

Eight Arabian Gulf countries have joined forces to propose strategies to protect the marine environment of the wider gulf region, reports Arab News.

At a meeting in Jeddah held by the Regional Environment Agency (ROPME), nations including Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates conducted overviews of their respective marine environments.

The participating nations sought new pathways to deal with hazards as well as methods to implement action plans, continued Arab News.

Ideas floated at the two-day meeting included satellite-monitored fisheries management, coastline protection and new regulations for ship pollution and on board transport of hazardous materials.
